Anthony was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1958. He began his career as a stage actor in the early 1970s, and he made his film debut in 1977. He went on to star in over 100 films, including some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films in Sri Lankan history, such as Nomiyena Minissu (1979), Eya Dan Loku Lamayek (1980), Bhakthiya (1981), Ran Mini Ran (1982), Sakmana (1983), Yuganthaya (1984), Ape Katha (1986), Hingana Kolla (1991), Siri Daladagamanaya (1996), and Nanthaththara (2002).

Anthony was known for his versatility and his ability to bring a character to life. He played a wide range of roles, from romantic leads to action heroes to comedic characters. He was also a talented singer and dancer.

Anthony won numerous awards for his acting, including the Sarasaviya Award for Best Actor six times. He was also awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, in 2009.
