Priyanka Chopra Jonas: A Global Icon

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an Indian actress, model, singer, and producer. She is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world and has won numerous awards, including two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. In 2016, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, and Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1982. She began her career as a model and won the Miss World pageant in 2000. She then transitioned into acting and made her Bollywood debut in 2003. Her breakthrough role came in 2004 with the film Aitraaz, for which she won her first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

A Sri Lankan resident in Italy, Uddima Oshadi De Silva, who took part in the 2013 Italian beauty queen context and selected for the final round was crowned as the film star beauty queen in Venice, Italy by Italian film star beauty queen Adriana Felusco.

A leading Italian film producer Massimo Baldy offered her the main role in his latest production. Born in Ratgama in the Galle district, Ms. De Silva settled down in Italy 14 years ago.

After Jacqueline Fernandez's success, another Miss Sri Lanka Gamya Wijayadasa signs a lead role in a Hindi film.

It looks like stepping off the ramp and straight into Bollywood sets has become an unspoken norm for most models both Indian and international. Seems like after Jacqueline Fernandez, Gamya Wijayadasa will be the second Sri Lankan beauty queen to give Bollywood a shot.

The model-turned-actress is all set to work in director Luv Ranjan’s next. The director’s last film was Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Gamya however refuses to divulge details about her upcoming project. She says, “I’m not at liberty to say anything about the character. All I can mention is that it’s a youthful film and am glad to be part of the project.”

Rajan’s upcoming project is set to hit the floor by the end of the year. However, it won’t mark Gamya’s Bollywood debut. The lady has already done an item number for an upcoming musical drama.

Gamya adds, “I have no qualms about performing an item song as I’m a trained dancer in the Sri Lankan dance form of Kandyan — which is very theatrical in nature — for over 15 years now. So it’s actually a lot of fun but at the same time, I don’t wish to be typecast as an item girl.”

Sri Lankan beauty in Miss Italy finals...

A girl born to Sri Lankan parents, Nayomi Andibuduge has been selected among the six finalists for the Miss Italy of the World Crown in the Miss Italy pageant. 18 years-old Naomi Andibuduge was among the 20 contestants competing in the category and has now been included among the six finalists.

The Miss Italy pageant will take place next month (2012, September 9) and the Miss Italy of the World is a new segment included this year where a foreigner living in Italy for a minimum of one year can take part in the contest.
